Designing Traditions

The Nagagi -workman’s coat- in its utility and materiality reveals a deep connection to the material and the object itself through the choice of materials, the treatment of the cloth in persimmon tannin, and the artful piecing of the sleeves. It encourages a relationship with the object, it resists completion, and it necessitates the user’s input and care. I took my grandmother's house in Chiapas as the site for which these samples would respond to; taking easily found materials and giving them intention and highlighting the beauty in the everyday.
